Cicely Saunders Americas International Inc was established in 2013 by Michal Galazka, who was a pioneer of international hospice education, and friend and collaborator of Dame Cicely Saunders. The name was changed to Cicely Saunders Americas Inc in 2019.

Dame Cicely Saunders (1918 – 2005) was a British physician and nurse who is credited with being the founder of the modern hospice movement. Her pioneering medical approach to what was then called ‘terminal care’ was the foundation of what became the medical specialty of palliative care: the treatment of physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual symptoms by a multi-professional team.

Our mission

The mission of Cicely Saunders Americas Inc is to raise awareness and support for hospice and palliative care particularly training, education and research.

Cicely Saunders Americas Inc is a US non-profit organisation, tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code and is governed by an independent board of directors. The directors are Dr Taylor Heyl, Dr Kathleen Foley and John McGrath.
